| Online Poker Casinos may soon allow betting on Hor |
08/09/2003 In a move that is surely to be followed by a great after-effect, California Governor Gray Davis recently signed a bill allowing horse race betting online and through the telephone. This bill could potentially open the door for Indian poker casinos to open online casinos. Despite this dramatic move, Indian tribes in California are not jumping on the bandwagon just yet. The tribes are not quite willing to extend themselves beyond their lucrative slot machines and table games (such as poker, blackjack, roulette etc.), much less gamble on huge investments in horse racing or even becoming involved in the legal wrangling around the issue of online casinos "We don't have any interest in that arena,” said Tom Dingman, general manager of the Rincon Casino, referring to betting at horse races through online casinos. Getting into this field is not as simple as it sounds. Casinos and other facilities would have to obtain permission from horse race tracks to simulcast the horse races and join the betting pools. In addition, they would have to renegotiate their gambling agreements with the state before even starting to offer wagering on the races. However, the anti-gambling lobby is still concerned. Said lobbyist Art Croney, “Depending on how aggressive they want to get, the tribes may not want to limit this to just race-track wagering.” |
