| Sue for preventing gaming compact extensions |
26/10/2001 Dairyland Greyhound Park sued Gov. Scott McCallum for preventing gaming compact extensions. On Tuesday Dairyland Greyhound Park sued Gov. Scott McCallum, asks a judge to bar the governor from renegotiating or extending current compacts with Indian tribes that allow casino-style gambling. The lawsuit filed in Dane County Circuit Court are searching for an ruling against the governor and the Administration Secretary George Lightbourn from entering into or renegotiating such compacts, which claim that gaming rights are illegal under the state constitution. The current compacts begin to expire May 2003. Dairyland Greyhound Park Executive Vice President Roy Berger said "The playing field was dramatically tilted in the tribes' favor when casino gaming became a part of the compacts," "What we are seeking is to level that field and fairly interpret limitations upon the governor's authority as provided in the Wisconsin Constitution, " said Berger. Just two of the five dog tracks are still running, which opened in 1991 in the state, including Dairyland in Kenosha. Their annual revenues have dropped by 50 percent since then, from $170 million to $86 million. McCallum said he would not endorse the dropped plans for a proposed $275 million casino complex at Dairyland Greyhound Park of Menominee tribe this summer. |
