The Temptations, Freda Payne and The Marvelettes Bring 'The Sound' To The Palace

LAS VEGAS-Nobody who has heard a Motown song can ever forget it, which is why the popular representatives of "The Sound"-- The Temptations, Freda Payne, and The Marvelettes -- are headlining the Caesars Palace Circus Maximus Showroom Aug. 24-27.

The Temptations are an integral part of Motown history, going as far back as the Motown bus tours -- called Motor Town Revues -- in the 1960s. Their early hits were "The Way You Do The Things You Do," "My Girl," "Get Ready" and "Cloud Nine."

The group that institutionalized The Temptations Walk (their synchronized, stylish stage move) has not slowed down for the 21st century. "We just never stop," says Otis Williams, the leader (and last original member) of the group, "because I think we've become like a piece of Americana. People want to see us."

Freda Payne, whose 1970s hit, "Band of Gold," brought her international prominence, started singing radio commercial jingles in her hometown of Detroit at an early age. At 17, Payne received her first professional job from Pearl Bailey, and she went on to share the stage with legends like Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Sammy Davis Jr., Billy Eckstine, Quincy Jones, Bill Cosby and others.

After her hit, "Band of Gold," Payne went on to score with "Bring the Boys Home." She made her acting debut on the Broadway stage, understudying for Leslie Uggams in the hit Tony Award-winning musical, "Hallelujah Baby." Payne has starred in television specials and has toured the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan. In 1994, she was dubbed a Dame of Malta, Knights of Malta, the Sovereign Military and Hospital Order of St. John of Jerusalem.

The Marvelettes' million-selling debut single, "Please Mr. Postman," helped create the Motown sound. Motown founder Berry Gordy was encouraged by the song's crossover appeal, and changed the label's focus from bluesy soul artists to the smooth harmonies and distinctive rhythms that continue to influence popular music today.

The group has scored its place in musical history with more than a dozen chart songs, including million-sellers "Playboy," "Beechwood 4-5789" and "Don't Mess With Bill."
