| Taiwan planning offshore casino |
16/03/2001 Minister of the Interior behind proposal to create gambling regional attraction Taiwan?s long-standing ban on gambling appears to be drawing to a close as Chang Po-ya, minister of the interior, plans an offshore casino. The casino, at a five-star hotel complex on the Taiwan-controlled island of Penghu, would create a new regional attraction for Chinese gamblers. However, the proposal has been met with mixed reviews. Gambling - for centuries condemned as a scourge of Chinese society - is now seen by some Taiwanese officials as a solution to the economic woes of islands such as Penghu. However, despite support from Chang, Penghu politicians and potential US investors, there is a great deal of opposition from anti-gambling activists. ?Of course there will be opposition to this . . . but I think this is something we can do for the sake of an offshore island's development,? said Ms Chang. Chang hopes to follow the Las Vegas development model. The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino, a subsidiary of US gambling group Las Vegas Sands, had expressed a strong interest in investing and, according to Chang, was willing to invest US $2.5bn in Penghu tourism development. Although officials at Great Penghu International Resort, the company behind the proposed complex, were less optimistic about the size of the investment, they did confirm that Las Vegas Sands wanted to participate in the venture. Chang has said that the project had the support of President Chen Shui-bian. She claims that he promised to give his approval at a meeting with Sheldon Adelson, Las Vegas Sands chairman, last year. However, the presidential office dismissed the claim, stating that the president merely noted that preliminary plans had been drawn for offshore island gambling. |
