| JAMES BROWN, 'THE GODFATHER OF SOUL,' HEADLINES AT CAESARS PALACE JUNE 1-3 |
5/10/2000 May 10, 2000 LAS VEGAS-James Brown, the unforgettable "Godfather of Soul" and "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business," headlines at Caesars Palace June 1-3. Brown established his career with his debut recording, "Please, Please, Please" in 1956. He immediately transformed his intense, gospel-style rhythm-and-blues singing, combined with dramatic showmanship, into a national phenomenon. Brown, who has been called "Mr. Dynamite," "The Godfather of Soul," "The Minister of the New Super Heavy Funk," "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business," "Soul Brother Number One" and "Universal James," is a living legend. "But of all the names I've been marked with, 'James Brown' is the most mysterious. In school, the kids and teachers always called me by it like it was one word: 'Jamesbrown,'" recalls "Mr. Dynamite" in his autobiography. Regardless of what you call him, James Brown has recorded 98 songs that have hit Billboard's top 40 R&B singles charts, a record unsurpassed by any other artist. Brown has scored 17 records in the No. 1 position, including "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," "I Got You (I Feel Good)", and "I Got The Feelin'." Brown's rise from juvenile delinquent to "The Godfather of Soul" is a great American success story. He was the only child of a poor family and was sent to Augusta, Ga., at age 5 to live at an aunt's brothel. He earned money by running errands for soldiers at nearby Camp Gordon, entertaining them with buckdancing and promoting his aunt's establishment. He sang gospel music and played piano, drums, and guitar. In 1952, Brown settled in Georgia and joined the Gospel Starlighters, a group that began with a raw southern gospel style and evolved into a rhythm and blues band, first called the Avons, then the Flames. The group cut a demo record of an original song, "Please, Please, Please," that was heard by a record producer who immediately signed them to King Records. The song was released two months later and reached No. 5 on Billboard's R&B chart. The rest is history. James Brown's performances at Caesars Palace June 1-3 are scheduled at 9 p.m. Friday, 8 p.m. Thursday and Saturday. Tickets are priced at $60, including tax, excluding a $3 ticket-handling fee.
