Self Ban program Approved

New Jersey casino regulators recently launched a new program that encourages compulsive gamblers to ban themselves from casinos. The program is based on similar programs that are currently running in Missouri and Louisiana.

The voluntary self-exclusion program, which begins next month, lets gamblers sign themselves up for either a one-year, five-year or lifetime ban from New Jersey casinos. After signing up, the gambler?s name and and photograph will be distributed to all 12 Atlantic City casinos. A casino that knowingly ignores the ban could face disciplinary action. In addition, any winnings the gambler won would be forfeited and if the gambler loses, the money could be confiscated and donated to compulsive gambling treatment services.

The program met with a positive response, although Arnie Wexler, a compulsive gambling consultant, felt that as the disease lasts a lifetime so should the self-exclusion ban.
