| Casino ship business owner murdered |
2/11/2001 SunCruz Gambling Cruises Founder ambushed and killed Gus Boulis, the founder of SunCruz gambling cruises--Florida's biggest casino ship business--was ambushed and shot to death last Tuesday night on an isolated road in Fort Lauderdale. Police are investigating whether the slaying of 51 year old Boulis was connected to some bitter business disputes, including one in which he allegedly threatened one of SunCruz's new owners. According to Detective Mike Reed, "Anyone who's had a past with Mr. Boulis we'll be talking to." He said the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies are being asked for help in identifying Boulis' enemies. "Whoever committed the homicide had planned to shoot him," says Reed. "They knew the travel routes. They knew what they were doing." Boulis had been embroiled in a series of lawsuits and countersuits in recent months over his US$147.5 million sale of SunCruz last September to a group headed by Washington lawyer Adam Kidan. A feud ensued after the sale. In December, Kidan obtained a restraining order against Boulis, claiming Boulis attacked him in a business meeting. According to court papers, Kidan alleged that Boulis had threatened to have him beaten or killed prior to the request for a restraining order. Boulis was also being sued by his former business partner, Dewayne Williams, who said Boulis cheated him out of his share when he sold SunCruz. In addition, Boulis was being sued by his former girlfriend for child support and alimony. Greek-born Boulis founded SunCruz in 1994 and turned it into Florida's largest casino ship business. He was forced to sell the company last year and pay a US$2 million fine because he was not a registered US citizen. |
