7/24/2001 Online Gambling in Australia Continues Regardless
The newly introduced Interactive Gambling Bill is yet to affect the online marketplace, According to recent figures from Internet monitoring group Hitwise, the Interactive Gambling Bill has had little effect on the online gambling market in Australia.
Despite the ban, Australians are continuing to visit gambling sites - 0.42 percent of all local traffic went to gambling sites during June. Moreover, more people surfed gambling sites than AFL sites.
Compared to other entertainment sites, gambling shone through, coming up second only to television sites. Leading the gambling pack was horse racing, attracting around 25 per cent of all traffic to the gambling category, while sports betting (not banned) and lotteries were not far behind.
In clear defiance of the ban, five casino sites made the top 20 gambling sites. The top casino-type gambling web site was casinoonnet.com. Many of the gambling sites visited were classified as Australian, making the company question the efficacy of the Federal Government?s controversial ruling.
